Fantasy Flight Announces Star Wars: Armada

Fantasy Flight, makers of Star Wars: Edge of the Empire roleplaying game, and Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game, have announced a completely new entry into their line: Star Wars: Armada.

The X-Wing Miniatures Game had some large ships, but you had to play by special rules, and the scale was all off. In this game, things appear to be scaled specifically so you can play with giant capital ships. There are still smaller ships, but now they're squadrons.

The movement mechanics are different from X-Wing: Miniatures. The scale is different. The complexity is different: This looks like a much more complex game that X-Wing.

For example, each of the capital ships is divided into four sections, each with its own hit points.

It sounds as though you'll be commanding from the capital ships, and the other ships (squadrons of tie-fighters, for example) are just part of your arsenal to protect that main ship.

You'll set your commands on a dial, but there's also a large, interlocking, pivoting navigation piece that will allow you to move, but also constrict your movement, in keeping with the massive scale of these ships. You can't turn on a dime.

A few things are similar to the X-Wing game. There are firing arcs, and range rulers. and dice. But these seem like high-level similarities. By everything else we can see, it appears to be a very different game.

So what are your thoughts on this?

Is this a savvy move by Fantasy Flight?  Will you jump ship (no pun intended) from X-Wing to this? Will you try to keep up with both?

Should they have tried to come up with a ground assault game so they're not poaching from an already successful franchise?

Let us know what you think in the comments! And we'll try our best to get Jeremiah to interview someone at FF while he's out a GenCon this week.
