Kickstarter Weekly—Oct. 9, 2013

Hey gang! We apologize that we haven't been bringing our usual steady flow of content the past 10 days or so, but life has been a little topsy-turvy for us—but we're getting our ducks back in their rows. In the meantime here's a look at some projects over on Kickstarter we think you should take a look at!

Featured Campaign!

Star RealmsStar Realms - Robert Dougherty

Star Realms is a pet project of Rob Dougherty and Darwin Kastle, two highly acclaimed MTG tournament winners. Star Realms is a 2-player deck-builder that is expandable to multi-player just by adding another deck for each 2 players who want to join the game. Unlike most deck-builders this one is a head-to-head combat style of game: less purchasing of Duchies, and more slugging it out.

It's way easy to get into at $15 for one deck (2-player version) but for an extra $10 you get a bunch of cool promos and freebies thrown at you! You can check out the full campaign, right here, and you have until Nov. 2 to get in on this one!

Castle RisingCastle Rising - Lost Games Entertainment

A very slick-looking strategic and economic board game. Players will seek to create the most prosperous kingdom, by building structures, training units, and gathering resources. The funding goal is pretty low on this one and they're already over half way there!

It's a little pricey to get in on this one if you're in the US because they're shipping from the UK; a pledge of $66 USD gets you the game, and you have until Oct. 26 to check out the campaign here.

PandantePandante - David Sirlin

Gambling - Lying - Pandas. In this amalgamation of poker and liar's dice, players play a poker-type game in which everyone lies about their hand. If no one calls them out on it, their hand is what they say it is.

A pledge of $35 gets you the basic version, and there is a deluxe version that runs $250! The campaign ends Nov. 7, and you can check it out here.

Sneak Preview!

Monsters and MaidensMonsters & Maidens - Clever Mojo Games

In a game for players 8 and up, this dice-rolling press-your-luck game looks like dicey fun for the family!

A pledge of $15 will score you a copy of the game, and the campaign (although not yet live) can be found right here!

Thanks as always for reading! We hope to hear from you out there on the internets - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and our Podcast!

Are you backing any of these games? Are there any out there we're missing out on!?

Last-Chance Kickstarter Project: Burning Suns

burningcoverHi Faithful Readers, Sorry we haven't been posting much this week; it's been crazy and busy around here—but jeremiah and I got to hang out for a few days! Today I wanted to give you a heads-up on a cool-looking project called Burning Suns, from SunTzuGames—it ends in just 48 hours. We featured it a couple of weeks ago in a Kickstarter Weekly, but today it gets its very own post. Burning Suns is a tactical, 4x game for 2-5 players, ages 14 and up. The time to play is approximately 40 minutes per player.

The game comes with over 700 empires. 700!! You can customize the race you play, and you'll have different strengths and weaknesses depending on what you play. I would love to find out how they were able to keep all of those empires balanced.

burningshipsThere's a market that lets you hire mercenaries, or build buildings, or buy other resources. There's warfare and negotiation and politics and dice, and everything you's expect from a 4x game. It comes with plastic ships, some of which hold dice that you use to track hits. It's elegant and simple and looks totally cool. There's a bunch of other stuff, and this just scratches the surface.

One of my favorite things about this is that they're looking for help from the community: SunTzuGames wants people to come up with tournament, co-op, and solitaire rules you can use with the game. That's a great way to involve people, get them invested in the product, and get the best game you can get.

£55 (or approximately $89) gets you a copy of the game, and all stretch rewards—and that includes shipping across the pond to the US. Check out the campaign while you still can—only two more days. Thanks for reading!photo-332.jpg

Kickstarter Weekly - Sept. 26, 2013

It's that time of week again, that special time when we bring you some really cool games that are trying to scratch and claw their way onto the gaming market. Will they make it? Will they fail miserably? Only you can decide! So buckle up, and hold onto your hats, it's time for Kickstarter Weekly!

Featured Campaign

Keep the CrownKeep the Crown - Jamal Jamie

We've received review copies of this one, and the initial impressions are pretty good right now. It's a game that kids can play well, but also one that adults won't dread pulling out... "Oh. You want to play Candy Land... Again." The rules have many layers to increase difficulty and strategy, and there's enough randomness to keep the replayability pretty high.

The campaign ends Oct. 30 and a pledge of $40 will score you a copy of the base game. Check it out here!

BattleaxeBattleAxe - Nick Ryan

This one looks like a pretty solid miniatures-based battle simulation. There are plenty of miniatures, and different soldier and troop classes, to use as you attempt to take out your opponent's king. The game looks pretty solid, but I wonder if the funding goal for this one is set a little too high, especially for someone unfamiliar to the Kickstarter community.

It takes a pledge of $65 to get the base game, and the campaign ends Oct. 23. You can check it out here!

Robot TurtlesRobot Turtles: The Board Game for Little Programmers - Dan Shapiro

This campaign is blowing up! They've already hit over a $500K in funding and 12,000+ backers. Robot Turtles is a board game for 3-8 year olds that in some way teaches fundamentals of programming. Players play cards with movements on them to navigate their turtles on the board and to their goal.

If you want to get in on the campaign, hurry, it ends TOMORROW! A pledge of $29 will get you a copy of the game, and you can check out the campaign, right here!

Mr darcyMarrying Mr. Darcy - Erika Svanoe

In the category of games your wife will be thrilled to play with you is this nifty looking strategy card game where players take on the role of characters in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" trying to land a marriage proposal from the most eligible of bachelors, Mr. Darcy. The campaign has already hit its funding goal, but there aren't many stretch goals that look terribly intriguing, other than helping get the game out to more folks.

$30 gets you the game, and the campaign ends Oct. 17; you can check it out right here.

Well that's it for another KS Weekly; we'd love to know if you're backing any of these projects, or maybe some others that we may have missed!

And as always we appreciate your subscription over on the right --->

And we'd love to interact with you on the webs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, and of course our brand new Podcast!

Kickstarter Weekly—Sept. 20, 2013

Well here we are again, wrapping up another busy week at TOG. You'll be seeing our 2nd podcast episode pop up in iTunes really soon, (seriously it's uploaded, just waiting on the Apple folks to do their thing) and we thought, "Hey! Let's do that Kickstarter Weekly thing that we do. So here it is.

Featured Campaign

photo-Ninja DiceNinja Dice - Greenbrier Games

This looks like a fun little dice-driven fast-paced game. Players are rolling dice, trying to grab loot, and beating up the other players in dicey-ninja action! The components in the video look slick, too!

A pledge of $25 gets you the game, The campaign ends Oct. 29 and you can check it out: right here!

Current Campaigns

Shadows EmpireShadows Over the Empire - Artipia Games/MAGE Company

I'm drawn to this game for a couple reasons: It looks cool, and when I say "looks" I'm referring to the bright and shiny artwork; the game looks fun, too. Card-based area control, with some intrigue and influence tossed in for good measure.

The campaign for this ends Oct. 10, and a pledge of $32 gets you a copy shipped to your door. You can find the campaign here.

Planet DefiantPlanet Defiant: Onslaught of Vanas - Pangalactic Entertainment

Galactic exploration for the sake of the future of Earth's population...in a board game. Lots of cool plastic minis included in this one. So if that's your thing, check this one out! It's a bit pricey though, so be ready.

The campaign ends Oct. 20, and an $80 pledge get's you a copy of the game. You can check the campaign out right here.

mafiawolf8 Bit Mafia/8 Bit Werewold - Michael Scott

Because we needed another deck of cards to help us play Mafia and Werewolf, there's this campaign. The good news is, it's 8-bit type of fun, and it's an inexpensive campaign to jump in on. The bad news is, it's another Werewolf/Mafia iteration.

A pledge of $6 will get you both decks, and the campaign ends Oct. 31 and you can check it out here.

Kickstarter Weekly—Sept. 12, 2013

codincaThis is me blogging from my sickbed today. I called off from my day job, but Firestone said I had to still write the Kickstarter Weekly piece so he could go to the Tosche station and pick up some power converters... Ok, that may be a complete exaggeration. Anyway, I may be laid up for the day, but the Kickstarter machine is still churning along, so let's just in and see what's happening.

Featured Campaign -

Codinca - Game Salute

In this game for 2-4 players, you'll use the 4 elements - Earth, Fire, Air and Water to block and create patterns. It looks like one of those easy to learn, hard to master abstracts that is accessible to all ages! They're offering a spiffy deluxe version with carved stones for tiles, and a velvet bag for carrying them. But there's only 5 left, so jump on it if you want in!

A pledge of $39 will get you a copy of the game, and a pledge of $99 will get you the sweet deluxe version. You can check it all out, right here!

alienuprisingAlien Uprising - Mr. B. Games

An interesting co-op game for 1-5 players, as you team up and take on the roles of the crew of a crashed spacecraft. The goal is to survive, repair your ship and escape before the alien inhabitants of the planet you've crashed on overtake you.

Mr. B. Games has already hit $60k in funding and have unlocked a mess of stretch goals. $45 get's you copy of the core game, but if you want all the stretch goals you'll have to bump up to an $85 pledge.

The campaign ends Oct. 2 and you can see it, right here!

404cover404: Law Not Found - 3DTotal Games

A nifty looking futuristic game that has players competing as robots that have gone haywire and now have the prime directives of: Improvise Science, Destroy War, and Hide Breathing. Looks like a fun medium weight strategy board game.

You can grab a copy for a pledge of 28 pounds (about $44 USD) and that includes free shipping to the US and EU. The campaign ends on Oct. 9 and you can check it out, right here.

Off Our Beaten Path

5175_121461395279_1007458_nStanding in the Stars: The Peter Mayhew Story - W. Ryan Ziegler

Many folks may not know this, but the man behind the mask, Peter Mayhew known best as Chewbacca, is in need of knee replacements, yes, both of them. He's getting specially designed artificial knees that had to be custom made for his 7' 3" frame. In the meantime the Mayhew family is chronicling this most real of adventures as Peter moves from Wheelchair to Wookie. The video for this campaign will leave you a little saddened as we see the gentle giant virtually crippled by his failing knees.

You can help the production of this documentary with a pledge as low as $5, and there are some cool incentives to pledge more (including the chance to be a guest at the Mayhew Family Ranch as the bid farewell to Peter's wheelchair, for a pledge of $10,000!) you can check out the campaign, right here.

How Did We Miss This?

playtestWe Didn't Playtest This Pasted on Theme at All! - Asmadi Games

Asmadi ran a special 5 day campaign for this, looking to raise $3,000 and they managed to gain $9,000. The idea is that if they ran a longer campaign the game wouldn't hit the market until next year, but with the shorter time span they're projecting the game to hit shelves before Christmas! This newest version of WDPTAA will have zombies, of course, as well as time travel, elves and other such geekery. I for one love the mindless chaos of the series so I'll be on the look out for this one soon! Congrats, Asmadi!

Kickstarter Weekly—Sept. 5, 2013

It's a shortened week with the holiday, but that doesn't mean things aren't happening over on Kickstarter. What should you be checking out? Here's a few suggestions!

WarfieldsWarfields - Menaveth Games

We'll be playing and reviewing this one soon. Looks like a fun 2-player battle, that is easy to learn and quick to play. The funding goal for this one is really high ($22,500!) when compared to other games that are mostly card based.

You can get a copy of the game for a $25 pledge. And you can see the full campaign here!

(And we're going to have an interview with designer Chris Green next week!)

SeptikomSeptikon - Hobby World USA

This game just looks cool! Another 2-player game with a hint toward tower defense. We're hoping to get our hands on this game soon, and we'll let you know when that happens.

Until then you can check out the campaign here. And a $60 pledge gets you your very own copy of the game.

Battle MerchantsBattle Merchants - Minion Games

Pirates! Well. Okay, not really, but the one guy on the cover looks like it. Battle Merchants is actually an economics game in which players are constructing and selling weapons in a warfare ridden land.

You can snag a copy for $48, and find the full campaign here.

SangokuSangoku - Game Salute

What Kickstarter Weekly post would be complete without a title from Game Salute? A Japanese-themed game by Mike Elliot of Thunderstone fame, Sangoku is a card game pitting players against each other to rule the three realms. Interestingly enough, this game is described as a "poker-style game." Hmmm.

A pledge of $35 will get you your own copy, and you can check out the full campaign right here!

Thanks so much for reading, let us know if you're backing any of these, and if we missed anything cool!

We'd love it if you liked us on Facebook, followed us on Twitter and Instagram, and subscribed to our YouTube channel, and to the blog by signing up over on the right!

Have a great weekend!

Kickstarter Weekly - Aug. 30, 2013

Well, our little experiment last week resulted in a much different outcome than we thought it would. Thanks again everyone for the feedback! We're back to normal for now, until we decide to rock the boat again! Speaking of new things, you may have missed it yesterday, (we had a little hiccup with our email delivery system!) but we have officially launched the Theology of Games podcast! You can find it on iTunes by following this link RIGHT HERE!!! We're very excited about this, and would love any and all feedback!

Anyway, there's lots of stuff going down on Kickstarter this week, so let's jump in!

Fantasy FrontierFantasy Frontier - Gamelyn Games

We're really excited for this one! Gamelyn Games, which brought us Dungeon Heroes, is bringing us this worker- and tile-placement game that has players exploring a new frontier in steampunky dirigibles! Check back soon for an interview with Michael about this, and all things Gamelyn Games! The campaign is chugging along and is about 20% funded after just 24 hours.

A pledge of $45 gets you in on a copy of the game, and you can check out the campaign, right here!

Cthulu CardsThe Cards of Cthulhu - Dan Verssen Games

Yep, it's another Cthulhu themed game. This time featuring a solitaire to 4-player system, </begin obligatory Cthulhu game description> players take on the roles of investigators trying to save the world from eternal torment, from the elder gods. </end obligatory Cthulhu game description>. The game system looks interesting on this one, and they've blown past their funding goal within the first 24 hours.

They've unlocked a lot of stretch goals and a $30 pledge gets you in on the fun, and you can check out the campaign, right here!

infamyInfamy - Mercury Games Inc.

This is Mercury Games' sophomore Kickstarter voyage after a successful first go-around. Infamy is a bidding-based game set in a cyberpunk realm,

$45 gets you a copy of the game and they're limiting the amount of pledges to 2,000, although it doesn't seem yet that their going to be turning folks away. You can check out the campaign, right here.

Burning SunsBurning Suns - Sun Tzu Games

It's really hard to tell a whole lot about the game play of this from the main video on the campaign. But check out those sweet die-ships! The game looks to be just the beginning of what will expand into something larger if they get the chance to bring it to market.

For a pledge of 45 pounds (About $69 usd) you get the entire game, plus anything else that is unlocked during the campaign. Speaking of which you can check it out here!

Funded!

A few campaigns have closed recently...

TemplarTemplar the Secret Treasures - Queen Games

So you're basically hiding treasure in an Abbey and trying to keep it safe. Looks like a fun game, but you're going to have to wait until it hits the shelves! You can take a look at the campaign, right here!

duel thanksA Duel Betwixt Us - Game Salute

The game was 624% funded. Yeah I'd say that was successful! We're pretty excited about this one. You can check out the campaign here, and our interview with co-designer Laurence Honderick too!

Whaaa happened?

PrivateerPrivateer - Ensignia Games

For some reason unbeknownst to us the campaign for Privateer has been canceled by Ensignia Games. This is a shame because the game looks great. We've reached out to Ensignia to see if they have any plans to relaunch the campaign. (The first one was doing great, just about $4,000 short of the goal with over 3 weeks left!) We're really hoping that we see this one re-launch soon!

That's it for now! Is there something cool you're backing that we missed? (I wouldn't doubt it!) Let us know!

A Video Double-Take Review of King's Forge

kingsforgeWe get a lot of prototypes to review. Some of them are awesome. And some of them are the Nickelback of games. Today we turn our sights to the Kickstarter game King's Forge by Clever Mojo Games and Game Salute. How's that game? I'm glad you asked...

Thanks for watching! We hope this video gave you a good overview of the game. As you can tell, we liked it.

An Interview With A Duel Betwixt Us Designer Laurence Honderick

duelcoverFor today's interview we're joined by Laurence Honderick, who co-designed A Duel Betwixt Us, a unique card game up on Kickstarter right now! As our baby gift to the Royal Couple, I've left in all of his charming and superfluous British "u's." Laurence, thanks for taking some time to chat about A Duel Betwixt Us!

Before we talk about the game, tell us a little about yourself.

I was born in Margate, Florida. I spent a lot of time on boats when I was younger and over the years I’ve survived a few shipwrecks. I went to art school but left early to co-found a technology startup, which moved me all over the States but eventually landed me in London.  After the company went bust, I began freelancing as a motion graphics designer, and now work full-time at a London agency creating motion graphics for television broadcast (mostly on the BBC). I never have enough time, but I do have a wonderfully supportive wife who I couldn’t do all of this stuff without.

How did you get into gaming in the first place?

The original idea-man behind the game (Rob Fitzpatrick) turned me on to Magic when we were in grade school, and hobby descended quickly into obsession. I have so many memories of us deckbuilding  in the middle of a bedroom where cards covered every visible inch of the floor...  We never really stopped playing MTG—we still do drafts occasionally and my highschool deck is proudly displayed in a place of honour in my living room.

So your new game is A Duel Betwixt Us: Tell us a little bit about it; what sets it apart from other 2-player combat card games?

Mechanically, the most unique thing is that you build your weapons and armour piece-by-piece for a specific outcome when you take it into combat, but the absurdist sense of humour which permeates the game as well as the super-stylised look and feel also go a long way in setting it apart.

You and your co-designer have known each other since you were infants... Tell us that story!

Actually, our friendship pre-dates infancy.  Our mothers met in Pregnacize class when we were in the womb (I believe Rob’s mom was actually the instructor).  He was born several months earlier, and when I followed, I think they just chucked me in the pen alongside him.  All of my earliest memories of friendship revolve around him, and we were definitely each other’s biggest cultural influences growing up.

duelWhat are some of the challenges you encountered codesigning a game?

Getting our schedules to line up was a real issue—we’re both consumed by our different careers in different ways, and free time to work on something as huge as this is hard to find as individuals, let alone as a pair.  Consequently, a lot of stuff had to be divided up and designated to one person or the other, so most of our time together which wasn’t spent playtesting was taken up by talking about stuff we’d done (or were going to do) while apart.

How did you land on the gentlemen’s duel theme for the game?

Rob had originally pitched the idea to me as a series of duels between medieval knights, but we ultimately thought it would be funnier to set such absurd acts of violence in a time where people considered themselves truly proper and manners & etiquette ruled supreme.  With knights who lived in more barbaric times it was maybe just a little too believable to be absurd.  Also, I could do funnier moustaches with a 19th century theme, which was a major plus.

Not a question, but I would just like to say that your Kickstarter video is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It also sounded like I was watching an episode of Danger Mouse, so thank you for bringing back fond memories.

Ha!  Thanks so much.  It was a labour of love, that video. It warms me to hear that it evoked memories of such a spectacular property!  The voiceover, which no doubt cued that particular connection, was performed by my brother Charlie, who was himself a Danger Mouse fan as a kid.

Is A Duel Betwixt Us your first attempt at game design, or are there others we should be getting to the table?

Rob and I had been prototyping games of one kind or another since college, but ADBU was the first one which really, really clicked enough for us to follow through.  It’s a huge amount of work to put together a game like this, and this was definitely the first which really deserved all of that love, time and energy.

What can you tell us about your plans for the future of A Duel Betwixt Us? Will there be expansions down the line?

Ultimately that will depend on how the kickstarter does, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought up one or two neat expansion themes.  Time will tell!

How would I keep a codpiece of solid gold from falling down constantly? Wouldn’t it be incredibly heavy? Wouldn’t I be so distracted by trying to keep it where it belongs that I’d be vulnerable to a dastardly fish-slap from my opponent?!

Surely you aren’t suggesting that you aren’t MAN enough for a SOLID GOLD CODPIECE?!

What’s your favorite thing about A Duel Betwixt Us?

Honestly, at this point my favourite thing about the game is the community of people who have come out to support us since we launched the video.  We’ve had so many great suggestions, questions, comments and well-wishes from backers who one week ago never even knew we existed... I’m so incredibly thankful for everything they’ve brought to the experience, I’d have difficulty verbalizing my gratitude.

What are your five favorite games right now?

Because of how demanding of my schedule the development of ADBU was, I haven’t had enough time to play many other games over the last couple of years, but Settlers of Catan, Dominion, and Gloom would be my favourite at the moment:  Settlers for its balance, Dominion for its strategy, and Gloom for its humour.
