Mustard Gas and Trenches: Memoir 44 moves to World War I
Fifteen years ago designer Richard Borg created the Command and Colors system, which is a simplified wargame framework where players use a deck of Command cards that represent orders and tactics; battle dice; and a board divided into a center, right, and left flank. Battlecry kicked it off, set in the Civil War. In 2004 Richard brought us Memoir 44, set in WWII (and my personal favorite of the games). In 2006 we got the fantasy-themed BattleLore and the ancients-themed Command & Colors: Ancients. 2011 saw Command & Colors Napoleonics. In 2012 we got Samurai Battles, and in 2013 an updated 2nd edition of BattleLore. As you can see, it's a very versatile system. So what's left to explore for this system? The Great War.
UK-based The Plastic Soldier Company has launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Great War. It will have everything you know and love from the system, but also features unique to this type of warfare, including trench warfare.
In his description of the game, designer Richard Borg says, "The scale of the game is flexible and varies from battle to battle. For some scenarios, a few infantry units may represent an entire wing of a larger battle, while in other scenarios a unit may represent just a few brave soldiers going over the top."
Just as we've seen in the other Command & Colors games, they're already planning expansions, including early war, Eastern Front, tank, and airplanes.
We just found out about the campaign, so it's already half-way done and funded--unfortunately the Early Bird pledges are all gone. Still, this is a really great system that has been perfect for playing with my kids. If you have any interest in the system, or World War I, check out the campaign.
And don't worry: We'll have our regular Kickstarter Weekly post on Friday. Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
